Sunday, May 19 was Daraja’s 9th Run for Daraja! 156 people in Kenya and San Francisco ran 12 kilometers to raise awareness and money for girls’ education. 40 people ran the Bay to Breakers race in San Francisco and an additional 50 people were fundraising partners. All 90 were matched with a current student at Daraja who was also running at the same time. Together, they raised $50,000! Exceeding the original goal of $40,000!
Special shoutout to the Drake Daraja Club, for raising over $10,000 and Andy Harley, who raised $4,319.35! Our other top individual fundraisers were the Schlaak family ($4,304), Sam Raniere ($3,521.50), Jeff Kohlwes ($2,246.25) and Lexi Santas ($2,222.50).
Surprisingly, both races (in Nanyuki and San Francisco) started off with rain. But as soon as the runners got going, the sun came out. In San Francisco, Daraja runners had to change meeting locations because of lightning concerns. And in Kenya, the trail marks for the race had to be redone several times by Daraja staff because of the rain. However, the race on both continents went well and participants had fun.
Ivy Kibet, a professional runner originally from Kenya who now resides in Colorado Springs, ran for Daraja in the Bay to Breakers race. She was the 2nd fastest female runner with a time of 40 minutes and 15 seconds. Interestingly, the top 3 female finishers were all Kenyan.
