Back to School at Daraja Academy
By Diana Grote
It’s the start of a new school year here at Daraja Academy, and the campus has already come alive! On Thursday, students arrived back to campus, lugging backpacks full of books, some having travelled for days to get here. Coming back to campus is truly a family reunion — students ran through the gates to hug their Daraja sisters, so excited to be back.
Even on Friday (the first full day back), students and staff were already in motion. After the opening meeting, students worked together to distribute textbooks for the new year, and to deliver stationary around campus. After that, you could find the students in the classrooms, reviewing their lessons for the new year. After studying was complete, students and staff gathered for sports, including a run around campus and student-led stretches.
To kick off the new year, students spent Saturday competing in an intramural sports tournament. Each class competed against the other year groups in football and volleyball. The competition was fierce, with each player giving everything they had. Yet, even with the individual intensity, students truly worked together as a team, and played with commendable sportsmanship. In the end, Form 3 dominated, winning both football and volleyball.
Watching the Daraja students working together to prepare for the first day of school and working together during the sports competition, it’s clear what it means to be Daraja. Daraja girls are not only incredibly dedicated to their studies — they are dedicated to challenging themselves in all areas of life, becoming well-rounded, kind people. Founder Jason Doherty congratulated the students after the competition for their sportsmanship, reminding them “that’s what Daraja is — competing to be the best you can be, but still loving your sisters.”
With a campus filled with such fantastic students, staff, and energy, it’s clear that this is truly going to be “The Year of Daraja!”
