Day of the Girl at Daraja
By Bethany Hardy
Today is International Day of the Girl Child! Daraja Academy is proud to stand with the UN and organizations all over the world in promoting this years theme, With Her: A Skilled GirlForce.
According to the UN, “of the 1 billion young people – including 600 million adolescent girls – that will enter the workforce in the next decade, more than 90% of those living in developing countries will work in the informal sector, where low or no pay, abuse and exploitation are common.” Daraja’s mission is to break that cycle, and it’s working. Daraja graduates have gone on to colleges, careers, and community service as a force for good that can’t be stopped.
In a beautiful show of support, Mr. Kipaloi, the Sub-County Education Director of Laikipia, joined students and staff on the Daraja campus today for a wonderful celebration of girls. He has been a strong supporter of Daraja and today was no different. To staff he said, “Education is like a fire; it burns and brings light. Everyday it is about adding fuel to this fire.” To students he emphasized, “You must believe that you are destined for greatness. You will inspire your communities to dream, to do more, and then become more.”
We don’t have to hope that Daraja girls will change the world, they are already doing it.
Thank you to all who support them in this endeavor.
