What is the relationship between DEF and DKI?
Daraja Education Fund (DEF) is a U.S. based, 501(c)3 non-profit, founded in 2007. Daraja Kenya Initiative (DKI) is a non-governmental organization (NGO) registered in Kenya, founded in 2009. DEF funds DKI, which funds Daraja Academy and other campus-based programs, such as the Transition Program. DEF also sponsors related programs, such as Powerful Beyond Measure for low-income girls in California.
When was Daraja founded?
DEF was founded in 2007. DKI was founded in 2009, and Daraja Academy’s first class of girls matriculated in February 2009.
Do students or their families pay for Daraja Academy?
Daraja Academy’s goal is to provide a free education to girls living in material poverty, so every student is provided with a full scholarship, including all room & board. Families are asked to pay for the girls’ transportation to the school, but this too is waived in exceptional circumstances.
Although students don’t financially pay for Daraja, they do “pay it forward” by participating in – and in many cases, creating – community service initiatives in their home villages, towns and cities.
What is Daraja’s Federal Tax ID number?
Our EIN, or Tax ID #, is: 20-8283551
