The Good Old Days
By Cynthia W. (Form 1)
Poetry
Those were the days, the good old days,
When I was a child, the queen of our home,
Everything depended on me,
My needs came first,
So tiny was I, yet I ruled them all.
Those were the days
The good old days,
When I started growing
Brought them running,
And an imaginary smile,
Set them smiling,
So tiny was I, yet I ruled them all.
Those were the days,
The good old days,
When our ladies stood up
To confess of their dreams
They came across too much,
But never thought of turning back,
So tiny was I, yet I witnessed it all.
Within a short time,
It was all over,
Now I live in fear,
For those who may thought to care.
The smiles are now rare,
And the hugs are now over,
So twisted is the world, the key word now is over.
Within a short time,
It was all over,
The men were gone,
And the women, were no striving,
They strived for survival,
But none was too strong to stay confident.
So tiny was I, yet I knew it all.
Never talk to a stranger,
Don’t smile to a lawyer,
Keep off the neighbor,
Beware! The pastor,
Watch out! The teacher,
Even your own father,
So where do I shelter? I can only trust my mother!
This words suffocate me.
In the moment of truth,
The women were now gone.
The men used to wrestle like kids,
Yet they had their minds,
The elders were now vanishing,
And no one seemed to care,
So tiny was I, yet I saw it all.
Those were the days,
When children used to go to school.
The girls were so precious,
And the women were so talented.
I want to live free,
I want to enjoy life,
I want to go and learn,
And become like modern girls
So growing am I, and still have the young dreams.
I remember this poem from long ago. It’s one of the golden gems of art.
