1 DENTIST. 378,000 PATIENTS.
D
Did you know that in Kenya, there is only 1 dentist to every 378,000 people? Drs. Peter Loomer and Yvonne Biuschi from New York University Dental are trying to help. For 10 years, they have partnered with Daraja to do check-ups and teach oral health to the girls and the local community. They have even helped the Daraja girls organize a group of student leaders who help their peers and nearby primary schools take care of their oral hygiene. A couple of weeks ago, NYU Dental held a fundraising event in New York, which was attended by Daraja founder Jason Doherty and included a video featuring Daraja’s campus and students.
GIRLS SAVING THE WORLD
A
After a stellar performance at the district and regional levels, Sophia and Eunice from Daraja’s senior class headed to Nairobi on April 6th for science nationals. They have created a hand-held water treatment system using plant-based filtration that can be used cheaply by people in drought-stricken areas.
