An Analysis of Technology

By Florence A. (Form 3)

Opinion

Technology is one of the most important components in current society. For us to do our jobs in offices efficiently we need technology to reduce the errors that would otherwise have been made if technology was not available.

The second reason we need technology is to reduce on the work load that we have in our different fields of specialization. For example, in big industries like those manufacturing sugar, we need machines. But there is a saying that ‘all that glitters is not gold,’ meaning that there are some disadvantages to technological advances.

It is because of technology that we have the mobile phones, computers and so many other electronic devices.  But we are failing ourselves with all of these devices, thinking we are on the right track. So many accidents have been reported due to the use of mobile phones while driving. Have you ever asked yourself -why this is always so? Our fate is always a result of our actions. Both people who have personal cars and those who cross the street on foot are not always on the look-out due to mobile distractions. This is one of the disadvantages of technology.

If we go to the social life, we are human beings and always need each other during difficult times. Look at this scenario. I have a very close friend called Mary and I am not at peace, and so I go to Mary to tell her how I feel that perhaps she may help me. Instead of looking at me, she replies with her head down, staring at her phone. Then I ask myself between your fellow human being and material things which one is more important? It is very bad when people are seated together but not talking, and everyone is on his or her own phone busy chatting.

Technology has also led to increased terrorist attacks. It is through technology that nuclear bombs are made. Our young boys and girls then indulge in activities that are not productive like joining terrorist groups on the internet. Additionally, technology has led to unemployment and less jobs, leading to the deterioration of a given economy. Machines can sometimes replace jobs previously performed by human labor.

I will not say technology is bad because it has led to progress in society and production. Let us not always be ignorant but consider our opinions wisely, and weigh both sides.  I believe in a quote that states, “IT IS THE LITTLE THINGS THAT WE DO THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE.”
