Bay to Breakers Champions Run for Daraja
By Beatrice Kilat
Philemon Cheboi, the 2017 Bay to Breakers winner and 24-year-old Kenyan runner from Baringo County has joined #TeamDaraja! Philemon will virtually run alongside Rhoda Chemos, a Form 2 student from Cheptais. Rhoda loves volleyball, math and science, and dreams of one day becoming a doctor.
While Rhoda runs in Kenya this weekend, Philemon has his sights set on another first-place finish in California. And this time, he’s not just running for time, he’s running for girls’ education.
“When you educate girls, you make equal opportunities in society and [in the] community,” said Philemon. “When we’re equal no one will be left out.”
Along with the 2017 champion, three-time Bay to Breakers champion Lineth Chepkurui will run the 12km race in Kenya. This won’t be Lineth’s first time running for Team Daraja – she won her third Bay to Breaker’s title in 2011 as she ran for Daraja – but it will be her first time running with the girls on campus.
Every girl at Daraja is running for her education. They’re running towards the women they will be, the doctors, engineers, teachers, and lawyers they dream of becoming. And they’re running for the girls who will follow after them.
Team Daraja is only as excellent as its members, and we’re so pleased that these champions have decided to join us as we fundraise to support girls’ education.
Join #TeamDaraja and donate to support girls’ education today!
