Fairyland
By Stella W. (Form 3)
Fiction
Before the death of my mom, she told me so much about fairies and Fairyland. I loved hearing her narrate them to me as part of my bedtime story. Every night, I would dream being in Fairyland with my fairy friends. I imagined them having large, bright wings that had shiny glitters and always shimmered under light.
Anyway, when my mom passed on, all my belief about fairies faded with her. My step dad never bothered about my bedtime story nor did my step sister, Daisy, care about any fairies. Each and every night I would cry in my sleep, for nobody seemed to ever care of helping me hang on to the sweet memories I had with my mom.
Then one night after my dear mom’s sixth anniversary, something amazing happened. I remember that during the day I had cried until my eyes were red tomatoes and as puffy as yeast bread. Even after all those years (I was now fourteen), I had not yet gotten over my mom’s death (Although I didn’t mention it since no one knows why or how she died).
I had already put on my pajamas and was about to sleep when I saw a white dazzling light in the corner of my room. Then it started becoming larger and larger until it was a shiny golden light. From it there stepped…if you don’t believe it…two fairies! I pinched myself to make sure I was not dreaming nor was I hallucinating or God forbid…dead! “Hi,” said the boy-fairy, “My name is Flavian.” And I am Flacia,” said the girl fairy. “We happen to be fairies from Fairyland.” “No! I do not believe in fairies. In fact, I’m too old to believe in them,” I said. I think the two fairies heard me for they shot me dirty looks…or were they sympathetic looks? I couldn’t tell.
“Well, you have to start believing because each and every time you say you do not believe in us, one of us dies. No! Don’t look shocked but you have to help us. We need someone who can convince the humans that we are real.” Flavian said.
“You can do that yourselves. You have wings, magic…” I tried to argue but Flacia would hear none of it. “You want us to make humans kill themselves? I actually saw you pinching yourself to make sure you are not insane, Grace.” “Wait how come you know my name?” I asked bewildered. “You know something Grace; we always listened when your mom told you about fairies and Fairyland. Remember her telling you a story about ‘Flavian and Flacia in Fairyland’? Well that was…or is us,” Flavian said pointing at Flacia whose cheeks were burning red. Yes I remembered that story where the two had fallen in love but in the process… “Grace, we have to go now!” said Flacia snapping me out of my stupor.
“Fairyland, here we come, Fairy wings take us there!” Flacia said in a melodious, singing voice. I remembered that it was one of the songs my mom sang to me. She always said that they had a magical feeling towards it but she never told me how she came to know about it. Sometimes she would end by rubbing my dark, curly hair and say, “never forget that you are my little fairy princess.” My mom would treat me like her princess and sometimes make me wear beautiful dresses for Halloween. Most of the time, they were apple green and silky. After a few seconds of being into nothing, I’m suddenly jerked to a halt and I almost fall but, thank goodness! Flavian and Flacia grab me just in time. I was surprised that they could pull me back yet I was so tall…Wait! I had either shrunk or they had become taller, for there we were, just the same height.
All around me I looked. I realized that we were on a snowy mountain but I did not feel cold. Below was a beautiful landscape of rose bushes, chrysanthemums, daisies, tulips, lavenders, blue berry bushes, raspberry bushes, cherry bushes, mango orchards, apple orchards…so many things that made me feel like flying with wonder. I could see streams of crystal clear water with silver fish gleaming in them.
Then I heard Flavia’s voice. “Come, we have to meet the queen.” Both held my hands and off we flew. In the horizon, I could see a huge gold castle with crystal windows. The gates were made of bronze and silver while the path from the castle was made of emerald and rubies. I had never seen something so magnificent. As we entered the castle, I saw the queen sitting on a gold eagle-shaped throne. She looked familiar. She had a long, flowing robe woven out of white silk. She had the same type of hair as me and something about her voice confirmed it when she said, “I am happy that you never forgot that you are my little fairy princess.”
Yes, my mom was right. I was her fairy princess.
