What Free Time Holds For Daraja Girls

Who on Earth doesn’t love having fun? Probably no one, this includes the Daraja girls. The weekends have their own special feelings. Saturday especially carries its own memorable moments for each and every Daraja girl. The speakers are a witness to the bang bang of sound of the music that plays every Saturday evening. The fun normally begins from watching the news updating us with the ongoings in Kenya and around the world. This marks the beginning, it’s followed by the best part, that is music time! This is when you get to learn different styles of dancing depending on the type of music. This includes R&B, Bongo(Kiswahili songs from Tanzania), Rhumba and many others. The night ends with a movie (either dramas or action movies). This might sound odd or rather a misinterpretation of the word ‘leisure time,’ but instead I would call it another way of relaxing. It is not a wonder for you to find some of the girls busy studying while on the other hand, others keep themselves busy reading novels such as Harry Potter and The Lightning Thief. This same period is when we get time to write our articles.
Without demure, sisterhood carries a lot of weight. In Daraja families, looking after each other as sisters, this is a responsibility that forever remains a life lesson. This comes from how we help each other look smart for school during the week, it takes more than love and sacrifice. When walking around the campus during free time, you will experience the love by how the girls are braiding each other’s hair and it gets more fun as you interact and share experiences and lessons.
The fourth pillar states that “Each day leave it better than you found it!” No matter how time is limited, we always find means of socializing with the volunteers; learn from them, at times we hike up the hill to watch the sunset with them. We’ll sometimes have art classes with them as a mode of relaxing. We are able to create an interactive forum that does not only dwell in academics but also and mostly dwell about social life and challenges and even without realizing, we leave each day better than we found it.
