Giving Back to Our Earth
If you visit Daraja–and we hope you will–you will immediately appreciate the beauty and serenity of our campus. The larger-than-life cacti, the singing birds, and the abundance of trees all work together to make Daraja a unique utopia.
Our girls need this tranquil environment as they heal from their past and focus on their future. Daraja is committed to sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. We harvest rainwater, compost all biodegradable waste and generate electricity via solar panels.
As an academic institution, we believe education goes beyond the classroom. We are thankful to add a HomeBioGas system to our campus repertoire. Through our recent partnership with Keilot, we are learning how to effectively recycle animal manure and organic waste to create renewable energy that can be used to fuel a stove in our kitchen and act as fertilizer on our farm. Our students are leading the charge to discover if bio-slurry, the liquid discharge produced by the HomeBioGas system, is more effective than traditional synthetic fertilizers. Not only are they learning experimentation techniques through hands-on procedures on our farm, but their findings will also help make our campus more sustainable and environmentally friendly.
