Kenya My Land

Wow! Wow! Wow! I do not know what to day or simply what to do. I am stranded as I am writing this article. Kenya is a land full of people with smiles on their faces, but others are crying. Crying for the future of Kenya. Where is the future of Kenya? Leaders, are you intelligent? Leaders, do you simply want to be seen as doing good? Where have you taken our youth?

Many leaders have a hand in demolishing the future of our youths. Let us start with the economic part. As you can see, the position we are now in  Kenya is not pleasing. We have so many debts which our generation is going to pay. As much as we want foreign investors, let us think about the future. What if we are unable to pay? Where will we go? What about that innocent person in the village? Who will rescue her?

A person once said that united we stand, departed we fall. If only we hold each others hand and share what we have with others, then we will improve our country to a better position. Socially, do we have unity among our tribes? When we give each tribe a nickname according to the way people live, is that really right? If we start seeing each other as Kenyans and not as Kikiuyu, a Luo, a Lulhya and many other tribes, unity will improve. Our youths grow according to the way they were brought up. If you bring up your child knowing this certain community has these stereotypes, he/or she will grow up remembering that.

In Kenya some cultural practices hold future generations back from their potential. Some parents restrict their children from marrying from a certain tribe, believing in some myth which does not make sense. Other cultural practice we are really trying to fight include FGM and early marriages among our society, but still some women practice this. What do we do? You risk your daughters life by doing such things in the name of culture, yet you never know what holds her future. She might be the next president. She might be the best musician in Africa.

Political leaders, where are you taking our country? Everyday you talk about the money we give you, but you never come back. You misuse us as youth, you leaders. You make empty promises which you don’t do. We only see you passing with black cars, so as not to see us. I know that we have good leaders who practice all qualities of a good leader and portray a good example to us as youth, but the corrupt leader are more than the good leaders. That is why we generalize them as bad.

When choosing a leader, we Kenyans we look at our tribe and maybe their financial status. We forget to look at qualities of the leader. It is the little things that citizens do that define a country. If we don’t improve on those bad behaviors in our society, it will be hard for us to have a good country.

My heart is weeping, but on the other side I am smiling. We as youth are the ones holding the future. We do have a lot of power to change the situation. Let us show and practice these positive qualities. A long journey starts with a single step, hence if you change that one thing in your community, you are changing the nation. Practice makes perfect.
