Welcome Back, Alumni!

By Sarah Cullip

On June 30, anticipation and excitement were in the air as the Daraja girls prepared to welcome home sixty-eight of their sisters.

It felt like a holiday as the gates were opened and a crescendo of shrieking and laughing took hold of the grounds. Former classmates embraced and reconnected, taking photos and talking excitedly with one another about their post-graduation endeavors.

Daraja girls from the pioneer Class of 2012 to the most recent Class of 2017 were back for a daylong reunion and to offer their perspective on life outside of the Daraja gates.

Through workshops and a question and answer session, alumni shared their insight and advice based on their personal experiences and adventures.

Covering everything from the confusing first-day-challenges at University to navigating peer or social pressures, to the applicability of the W.I.S.H. curriculum in the real world, current Daraja students leaned in with wide eyes, drinking in every word.

“W.I.S.H. teaches you assertiveness,” said Jacinta K., Class of 2013. “You are able to stand for what is right, you are able to stand up for what you want.”

“Family Trees,” or campus families made up of one or two girls from each Form, bloomed and were suddenly complete all the way up to the “great-great-great grandmothers,” revealing to the girls just how deep the root system runs in the red Daraja soil.

“Keep the connections you make here,” said Maureen K., Class of 2014. “They will help you navigate the ups and downs ‘out there.'”

Thank you, Daraja alumni, for being such excellent role models and for coming “home” to share your success with us!
